First smartCurling Training Week in Riga Completed

The first training week at smartCurling’s Europe – East location in Riga has been successfully completed. Team Ekaterina Kirillova, current Belarus national women’s champions, took part in a week-long training week at the SIA Kerlinga Halle in Riga. Training week leader was international coach and smartCurling founder, Brian Gray.

“It has been an excellent week”, commented Gray. “Everything at the SIA Kerlinga Halle in Riga was new for all of us, so the potential for technical hitches was there. But everything went really well and the ladies really enjoyed themselves too.”

“Have they improved? Yes, they really have! Even in just two days I could see real improvements. Team communication and sweeping were transformed in a very short period of time. There was a  lot of information to digest, so it means the learning process will continue long after the week is finished.”

“There was a lot of information”, commented Ekaterina Kirillova after the week. “My head was buzzing sometimes. But we really enjoyed our training week in Riga. It was just what we needed.”

Just how much they enjoyed themselves can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHjOQNUpcC4

The idea to have an International Curling School in Riga was initiated by smartCurling in close cooperation with the board of the SIA Kerlinga Halle. The school allows teams competing in national and international championships to work with an experienced international coach on a 4-to-1 (4 players to 1 coach) basis.

“There has been quite a bit of interest in the new school from outside of Latvia, thanks to the Facebook website. We have almost 200 followers on that website. Latvian curlers shouldn’t hesitate to check us out on Facebook too, to get informed about new coaching opportunities in their country.”

The next coaching activities will be in September 2012.

Brian Gray, founder of the smartCurling project in 1998, has been working with the Latvian Curling Association since 2004.
